When thinking of proposing, you probably have an ideal picture of when and where you want to be when you pop the question. But when you open up that tiny box in your vision, can you picture what the engagement ring actually looks like? Deciding on an engagement ring can be an overwhelming process and The Jewelry Center wants to help make it more simple! Through this process, we hope your vision of asking your soulmate to marry you is complete, including the finer details of the engagement ring!

Step One: Determine budget. When you know what your budget is, our jewelry specialists are going to be able to help you provide personalized options when you begin searching for the ring. There are plenty of “rules” out there that you may have heard or read while you’ve been thinking about proposing. Your budget is based off of what you are comfortable spending. Some of you may prefer to put a higher investment into her ring since it is something that she will wear every day and is a symbol of the love you two have for eachother, while others may want to spend less on a ring so they have a larger budget for the wedding, a honeymoon, or a future down payment on a house! No matter your budget, there are still 8 more steps to find the perfect ring for your future fiancée!

Step Two: Determine style and ring size. At The Jewelry Center, we understand how important choosing the perfect ring can be - since an engagement ring is not only a representation of her style, it is a symbol of your love for one another. This can be the most difficult part if she wants the engagement to be a total surprise! Look for subtle hints, talk to a close friend or family member, and maybe do some Pinterest board investigating. ;) Take note of whether most of her jewelry is gold, silver, or maybe even rose gold. Do they wear a particular stone or gem often? Think about their personality; does your bride prefer simple elegance or a more modern design? If you’ve been talking about marriage, a trip to The Jewelry Center to browse can be very helpful! Better yet, bring her in to help you pick out a watch and she will most definitely end up wandering over by the diamond rings. Take note of what she points out to you and what she definitely does not like. After determining style, next is ring size. This can be difficult to do if you are trying to keep the proposal a complete surprise. If your bride-to-be is fully involved in the process, ask their ring size or your jeweler will be able to help you determine ring size. If it is a surprise, you can either confide in family members for their opinion or if she already wears rings, take one in to your jeweler so they can determine its size.

Step Three: Research the 4 C’s. If you determine that a diamond engagement ring is the way to go, it’s important to learn about how diamonds are graded or classified. This is done with the 4 C’s: Cut, Color, Carat, and Clarity.

  • Cut - The true definition of cut is the quality of the proportions and symmetry of the diamond. Your diamond's proportions make a vast difference on how brightly your diamond shines. An 'ideal cut' diamond is one that allows the maximum amount of light to return through the top of the diamond, which takes into consideration the depth, table size, crown height and angle, girdle thickness and more. The cut of a diamond is often confused with its shape.
  • Color - The color of a diamond is determined based on the conditions of the environment when the diamond was formed.Diamonds range from colorless to yellow or light brown, and are sometimes found in a spectrum of fancy colors, including yellow, blue, and even red diamonds. The less color, the rarer the diamond. While colorless or white diamonds are most popular, it is all about what your bride would prefer.
  • Carat - This is the weight of the diamond. The greater the carat weight, the rarer, and more valuable the diamond becomes. Five metric carats weighs exactly 1 gram. This is the most visually apparent factor when comparing diamonds, but can be the least important factor when determining which diamond is best for your engagement ring if you are looking for a particular shape and one that really sparkles in the light.
  • Clarity - Diamonds are composed of mostly carbon. During the heating process, other elements become trapped inside, giving each diamond its own unique fingerprint. These inclusions help identify the clarity of your diamond.

Step Four: Determine the diamond shape(s). There are many different diamond shapes; from round cut to asscher cut and everything in between, there is a look that both you and your bride-to-be will have a preference over. Look at them all either in person or online and determine what shape is best for her style. You can view diamond shapes by utilizing the Diamond Search on our website. This function will also allow you to adjust cut, color, carat, and clarity during your search.
